Overview

Companimals is a companion app intended to enhance the Woodland Park Zoo experience. Primarily catered towards kids, the app will aim to build a sense of empathy within the users by supplying up-to-date information about animals in the zoo. Statistics like names, age, origins, and other data about the animal will be explored. Other features of the app will serve to enhance the experience outside the zoo, such as livestreams of the animal enclosures, digital coloring books, home crafting projects, and many others.

    Backstory of Project

In our initial group meetings, each member brought in ideas on what we had in mind to create for the concept. We had ranged from a video game, a redesign of the Woodland Park Zoo website, coloring pages that empathize empathy, and a product or service that connects the user with animals. We had a good variety of options but we combined the product that connects users with animals and activities that users can do inside the Zoo and outside the Zoo.

      Proposed Objectives

      • Help users understand each animal's needs by telling stories
      • Start conversations about empathy and conservation
      • Help users foster empathy for less-understood or "unpopular" animals
      • Get users excited to visit Woodland Parks Zoo

      Pain Points

      • The zoo is an infrequent place to visit, so would a companion app help boost audience attendance?
      • Too much to explore on the app (i.e. important stats and features will be glossed over)
      • Prompts use of phone during zoo visit
      • App use may be "one and done"
      • Audience may not have phones/knowledge of tech

      Good Design Elements

      • Animals all have profiles (names, fun facts, where they are from/born) to help users connect with the animals
      • Conservation tab on the app allows users to see how endangered the animal is and how they can help
      • App includes an animal cam which can help users determine if the animals are outside, which saves time and resources
      • Activities are refreshed and seasonal to help preserve interest in the zoo
      • Information is updated frequently to keep things fresh

      Project Risks & Dependencies

      • The primary audience may lack knowledge of technology
      • User budget and funding for phones and tablets
      • Compatibility across different devices
      • The types of phones our users will have (i.e. iPhones, Androids, etc)
      • Lack of translations in other languages and other accessibility issues
      • WIFI availability

      Reflection

Having the opportunity to work on a real-world project has placed me in a level of standard that the industry follows. The experience allowed me to fully immerse myself into thinking every single design decision and figure out how to best solve the problem that the stakeholder needs. From our decision making to our analysis of our solution, this experienced provided more freedom to fulfill my creativity and my potential as a designer.
